This is thought provoking stuff Harry, especially the point that the time to capture views is when people are recent customers (sorry, can't think of a better word) of a particular service or otherwise involved in a particular issue. I wonder what a 'get satisfaction' style, always-on place to vent spleen or post ideas would look like for govt, and what kind of change to current working methods and resource allocation would be needed to run it.

Was good teaming up with you for this. Let's do it again sometime :)

btw I've posted my thoughts in more detail now too at http://neilojwilliams.net/missioncreep/2009/what-i-nearly-said-at-government-2010/

A good debate to open up.

There are plainly different strands and issues

- statutory consultation: participation, timeliness, whether anyone listens
- feedback, complaints etc
- evidence-based policymaking
- market research/polling/focus groups and thier role in policy process

Plainly the new tools available put this process into meltdown.

So - given new tools, what do we need I wonder?
